In the late 1960s and early ’70s, Baldwin-Motion big-block Camaros set the standard for street performance - and left their marks in the NHRA and AHRA drag racing record books. Today, legitimate examples command prices normally associated with rare exotics and classics. Shortly after the 2011 Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals, an original-owner ’68 Baldwin-Motion L88 Camaro changed hands for close to $500,000! Built in 2005, the SuperCoupe, above, was purchased by mega-collector Ron Pratte for $486,000 at the 2006 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction. Current owner, Ed Bedore recently purchased it, again at a B-J auction.
The SuperCoupe taps into the heritage, horsepower, and
high-energy of the original 1967-1969 Baldwin-Motion big-block SS &
Phase III Camaros. It also showcases highly sophisticated styling,
modern technology and a proprietary powertrain, tubular chassis and
four-wheel independent suspension.
“Motion LLC CEO Larry Jaworske and I put together the ‘best of the best’
to ensure that the Baldwin-Motion ’69 Camaro SuperCoupe respects the
brand’s original heritage and integrity,” said Joel Rosen. “It has no
peers, on the road or the show floor, here or abroad,” added Joel
Ehrenpreis, Motion LLC president.
Under its hydraulically controlled hood rests an all-aluminum Merlin/Motion 540-inch (4.50-inch bore; 4.25-inch stroke) big-block rated at 700 horsepower. It’s fitted with a custom Kinsler EFI Cross-Ram fuel injection system and topped off with a pair of highly polished original (1969-70) finned aluminum Motion valve covers.
The two-seat SuperCoupe’s engine layout is front/mid, with the aluminum big-block set back 13 inches on the custom 2x3-inch steel tubular chassis. The proprietary chassis features a tubular steel backbone that runs through the console and is welded solid to the body, resulting in an incredibly rigid platform. Unique four-wheel-independent suspension features polished unequal-length control arms with toe-in control links, fully adjustable coil-over shocks, and sway bars. Steering is variable-assist rack and pinion. Motion-branded Baer Extreme-Plus disc brakes with six-piston Sport calipers and two-piece 14-inch cross-drilled and slotted rotors are used at all four corners. The SuperCoupe debuted at the 2005 SEMA Show where it won the coveted GM Design Award. It has received the most media coverage of any custom-built '69 Camaro ever!
