Gary Bowers (’65 Mustang) and Dave Walsh (’32 Ford Vicky) are the big winners at the Goodguys 15th annual PPG Nationals.
Gary Bowers’ bright orange ’65 Mustang won the 2012 Goodguys Optima Batteries Street Machine of the Year gold, while Dave Walsh’s black ’32 Ford Victoria collected the Classic Instruments Street Rod of the Year title. The Ringbrothers-built hi-tech, ground hugging Mustang represents the latest in track-ready, show-quality super muscle cars. Walsh’s Vicky, built by Bobby Alloway, represents the time-tested appeal of a smoothed-out early Ford.
Known for their ability to transform Mustangs into modern masterpieces, Ringbrothers set the bar even higher with Bowers’ ’65 “Producer.” The body was widened four inches, two inches on each side, the rockers extended, and there's a full belly-pan underneath. Both hood and roof are carbon-fiber, signature Ringbrothers’ touches. Power comes from a 740 horsepower Keith Craft 427 cubic inch stroker, based on a 351 Windsor small-block. The matte-finish three-piece wheels were designed by Ringbrothers, built by Forgeline. Baer Brakes, Afco shocks and a suspension consisting of front tubular A-arms and a Watts link rear setup insures razor sharp handling. The car gets its name, “Producer” from Bowers’ Waynesburg, PA, Producer Supply Company.
While Producer gives a glimpse of the future, Dave Walsh’s ’32 Vicky is a timeless beauty with a rich and smooth PPG Deltron black coat. It sits on an Alloway chassis. The signature Alloway big & little polished wheels were cut by Billet Specialties and the car gets its rake courtesy of a Pete & Jake four-bar suspension with a five-inch dropped axle. So-Cal Speed Shop goodies offer a nostalgic flare, but there’s nothing vintage about the potent 502-inch big-block mated to a Tremec five-speed. Inside the cabin is a custom leather interior by Steve Holcomb’s Pro Auto.
