MERCEDES-BENZ AMG: 45 YEARS OF DRIVING PERFORMANCE!

Founded in 1967 by Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, Daimler AG’s AMG subsidiary is the brand’s technological spearhead in the high-performance field.

The image of AMG as the performance brand of Mercedes-Benz is reflected in its impressive successes in the world of motorsports and its unique approach to creating high-performance on-road vehicles, like the SLS AMG and C63 coupe & sedan, above. The AMG brand promise of “Driving Performance” stands for state-of-the-art technology and pure driving excitement.

AMG recently revealed plans to launch the new A 45 AMG in Europe and other markets (not available in the U.S.) beginning in 2013.  The new A45 AMG - the top-of-the-market Mercedes-Benz A-Class model, will address a new target group that is younger than the traditional AMG customer. Specifically developed for the A 45, the AMG 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine will have maximum torque significantly above 295 pound-feet and low fuel consumption levels.

As the first vehicle developed independently by Mercedes-AMG, the SLS AMG unveiled in 2009 showcases the expertise and passion that exists at AMG. Mercedes-Benz will offer the new 2013 SLS AMG GT in coupe or roadster trim in mid-November 2012.

The specific assembly area for the SLS AMG is located in the M-B plant in Sindelfingen.  The AMG 6.3-liter V8 engine comes direct from the AMG engine workshop in Affalterbach, where it is hand-assembled according to the traditional “one man, one engine” philosophy. In addition to the new performance compact, the SLS AMG GT and the GL 63 AMG, above, future S-Class models will play even greater roles at AMG. The current offering - S 63 AMG, below, and S 65 AMG - as well as the CL 63 AMG and CL 65 AMG will be extended further over the coming years.

All-wheel drive is set to play a bigger role at Mercedes-AMG in the future too and not just for SUVs and off-road vehicles. Mercedes-AMG currently has four all-wheel-drive models in its lineup: ML 63 AMG, below, G 63 AMG, G 65 AMG and the GL 63 AMG. To mark the start of the new era in 2013, the new A 45 AMG (not available in the U.S.) will feature a performance-oriented all-wheel drive system as standard.

A further building block adopted from the world of motorsports involves lightweight construction: Less weight means better performance and lower fuel consumption.  As part of the lightweight construction strategy known as “AMG Lightweight Performance,” Mercedes-AMG will continue to reduce vehicle weight. Through experience with the SLR, the AMG Black Series and in motorsports, Mercedes-Benz and AMG have accumulated more than ten years of expertise in working with carbon fiber.  The SLS AMG incorporates a carbon fiber driveshaft, and the SLS AMG Roadster features carbon fiber sandwich structure.  The 2013 SL 63 AMG and SL 65 AMG feature an internal support for the trunk lid produced from lightweight carbon fiber composite.

As AMG celebrates its 45th anniversary, the model lineup, above, is larger and more diverse than ever before.  In the U.S., the 2013 product portfolio will include 17 AMG high-performance vehicles with power ranging from 415 to 621 horsepower and include:
