’61 Pontiac SD-421 Catalina is a ground-pounding ‘tribute’ to the golden days of Super/Stock racing.
Sarasota Café Racer Mike Bretsch and wife Jackie have done something that Pontiac couldn’t in 1961: Build an SD-421 Super/Stock! Back in the day, Pontiac didn’t start building Super-Duty 421 (and SD-389) models until 1962, with the majority going to NHRA drag racers and NASCAR teams. In 1961, they offered do-it-yourself drag racers over-the-counter SD-421 engines and components (Super-Duty Kits) so they could compete in NHRA Optional Super/Stock (OS/S) competition. In 1962 Pontiac ramped up SD-389 & 421 production, producing 177 Super-Duty cars (15 SD-389, 225 SD-421) plus 63 replacement engines.
