Multi-talented paraplegic drag racer is determined to run in the 6s and into the Guinness World Records.
Like so many hot rodders and drag racers, Marcus Culvert got his start racing on the street. He had been a regular at metro New Jersey-New York City street racing haunts before landing his dream job: Wrenching muscle cars at Motion Performance, legendary home of NHRA & AHRA record-holding Modified Production Camaros and Baldwin-Motion Super Chevys. While at Motion and later, he logged well over 200 quarter-mile passes at Atco Raceway (NJ), Englishtown Raceway Park (NJ), Island Dragway (NJ), Cecil County Dragway (MD), Capitol Raceway (MD) and Gateway Intl. Raceway (MO).
Tragedy struck in 1992 while Marcus was working with the U.S. Navy in Yokohama, Japan. He was involved in a near-fatal motorcycle accident, resulting in the loss of use of his legs. After two years in rehab, he was ready to go racing again, this time driving with hand controls. His win-record at Raceway Park (NJ) was an incredible 75 percent!
In recent years he has been racing a couple of small and big-block Chevy Malibu coupes, powered by pro-built, nitrous-injected engines. His red ’78 Malibu, top, ran in the mid-9s thanks to a Pat Musi 832-horsepower 555-inch big-block. Activating its 350 NOS Nitrous Fogger, horsepower jumped to over 1,000! The multi-color ’80 Malibu, above, ran 9.80s and 134 mph with a nitrous-injected, stroked 377-inch small-block. Marcus, below, wrenches & drives. Both cars have been sold.
An accomplished bass guitarist, entertainer, community activist and founder of a 501-3-C Non Profit, Marcus devotes a lot of time raising awareness of domestic violence and human trafficking. He also mentors young boys in Bergen County, NJ who have lost their fathers. Now he needs help to get behind the wheel of a pro-built Outlaw 10.5 class car, running either a turbocharged or supercharged engine on pump gas and 10.5-inch tires. His mission: Set a world record for a paraplegic drag racer!
“If anyone can do it, Marcus can,” said Joel ‘Mr. Motion’ Rosen, left, his boss at Motion Performance. “He is an incredibly talented, driven young man who can wrench as well as drive serious racecars. And, he’s reaching out for support for a project that offers wonderful brand marketing opportunities for sponsors.”
