CISITALIA 202 COUPE: AHEAD OF ITS TIME!

Mike Gulett, our friend on the Left Coast, blogs about Pininfarina’s Cisitalia, one of the most influential examples of postwar automobile design.

Sitting in the permanent (Architecture & Design) collection in the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York City is a stunning Cisitalia 202 Coupe. Donated by the manufacturer, the 202 was shown to the public for the first time at the 1947 Villa d’Este Gold Cup Show in Como, Italy, followed by the Paris Automobile Show. The handcrafted aluminum long hood/short deck sport coupe body was designed by Battista “Pinin” Farina and installed on a rolling chassis supplied by wealthy industrialist and amateur road racer, Piero Dusio. Between 1947 and 1952, Dusio’s Cisitalia (Consorzio Industriaile Sportive Italia) produced just 170 vehicles.
