Experimental A-311 fuel-injected Hemi-powered Kurtis-Kraft bested the track record during practice at the Brickyard in 1952; AAA changed rules to ban it.
It could have been a contender! After watching a Kurtis-Kraft roadster run consistent laps of 137 mph during 500 practice in May 1952, Indy 500 sanctioning body AAA gave in to the demands of 270-inch Offy-powered car owners and changed the rules. The bottomline: Stock blocks, like the 331-inch Hemi, were limited in displacement to 270 cubic inches causing a 40-horsepower drop in the Hemi. Chrysler’s revamped 270-inch short-stroke Hemi was not competitive and Chrysler dropped its Indy program. Firestone later used the 331-inch and future 354-inch Hemi Indy cars for its tire-testing programs.
