Howmet Corporation and Ray Heppenstall proved that there was a substitute for cubic inches, and less is more.
In the photo above taken during the record runs, Robert Johnson, left, executive vice president of Howmet Corporation, discusses the performance of their new TX Mark II turbine car with its designer and driver, Ray Hepppenstall. Powered by a Continental lightweight TS325 turbine shaft engine, the sleek sports car set six international records for various distances and turbine racecar weight classes. Its 170-pound turbine powerplant generated 325 horsepower at the output shaft and 650 pound-feet of torque. The under-three-liter (2,960 cc) engine was redlined at 57,500 rpm!
Heppenstall clocked over 105 mph in the Standing Kilometer and also set FIA records for ¼ & ½ KM. The record runs in 1970 were organized and conducted by IMSA, sanctioned by NASCAR and run on a section of road adjacent to Talladega Speedway.
